The BLACK Scandal Pop-up shop is currently touring Japan. It features work from the much-celebrated collaboration between Yohji Yamamoto and Japanese painter Suzume Uchida.
Uchida’s artwork is often self-portraiture, in a gothic style that matches well with Yohji’s aesthetic. There’s a fragility to her work, but also an erotic power.
Pieces from this collaboration first appeared as part of Yohji Yamamoto’s 2018 Paris spring/summer menswear collection. The BLACK Scandal line is continuing alongside Pour Homme, as is the collaboration between Yohji Yamamoto and Suzume Uchida.
I went along to the BLACK Scandal pop-up store at my local Hankyu department store here in Fukuoka last week. Accompanying the store around japan are some of the Tokyo Yohji Yamamoto staff. Very cool dudes, all with the seemingly obligatory long hair, goaties and overcoats.
The main products on display were a selection of new pieces, all with indigo blue on black designs, including this black gabardine jacket with zip lapel detailing, as well as these graphic print shirts and drawstring trousers.
Some classic BLACK Scandal pieces were shown, including these black and orange leather jackets with the Uchida’s demur pose on the reverse.
I love this shirt, with a graphic of the man himself.
If the $1000+ price tag of this shirt scares you (like it did me!) then you can have the same pattern on these arm/leg warmers.
Also on display were these artworks by Ms. Uchida. If you’re in Tokyo in December, there’s a special exhibition of her work on in Ginza between December 7th-13th.
